On this Bank Holiday Sunday (28th August) Sophie Lee, Libby and I set up a little Reading Room on the pier at Lytham St Annes...Artist books held down with stones, the yellow armchair, sandwiches and sand castles. Lot's of weekenders 'pier-ing' in, reading and asking questions...Mostly, 'What the 'eck are ye doin?' All in all an interesting intervention. More soon.

Sophie and I are organising a little auction for Manchester School of Art's Photography course....

"Come and celebrate the power of photography and raise money for charity at The Silent Night Auction on the 9th December in central Manchester.

On sale at the auction will be a selection of beautiful, contemporary photographic prints, donated by past and present students from The Manchester School of Art's Photography Course.

The money raised from the auction will go towards the Tom Hurndall Award and to the photography course itself, in order to enrich the current student's learning experience. A percentage of sales will be donated to a charity selected by members from Tom's family (will be confirmed nearer the date).

Organised by Piccadilly Projects, along with Innospace and The Manchester School of Art's Photography Course we aim to raise funds whilst showcasing the diverse and exciting work produced by students and alumni. Providing a platform to build relations between local business, students and the community."

...Hopefully this will be great chance to meet some people slightly out of our usual circle who might be interested in collaborating with us/commisioning us!

Manchester Artist Book Fair 2010

Last Saturday was the Manchester Artist Book Fair in the Holden Gallery at Manchester School of Art as organised by Hot Bed Press. It was a lovely day for Parlour Press (the all girl close vocal harmony group/independent press I am part of...) as we found out we are soon to be artists in residence at the amazing Hot Bed Press studio in Salford for six whole months!! There will be more news on this soon...But for now here is an Instax pic of myself and fellow Parlour Presser Libby Scarlett.... I will also post some pics of my new publication up very soon, upon it being guillotined.

Last Last Sunday was the Piccadilly Self Publishing Fair. It was a very typical Manchester rainy day but stall holders and visitors came regardless!

It was a brilliant day and Sophie Lee and I met so many new artists that I will hopefully have the good fortune to meet again and maybe even collaborate with in the future...

Also last week was the Piccadilly Self Publishing Exhibition, a week long exhibition following the Piccadilly Self Publishing Fair. We showcased self published works by the likes of Ultimate Holding Company, Lucy May Schofield, Kitty Dunne, Parlour Press, Preston Is My Paris and Article Magazine.

Salford Zine Library also joined us in our empty shop unit with some of their 12000 zines!

We had plenty of visitors which was reassuring as we hadnt been able to afford to print posters or flyers. The power of the internet seemed to have done the trick!

We got an interesting proposition from Manchester Libraries this week....They have asked if they can have a mini mobile library at our Piccadilly Self Publishing Fair and Exhibition in October!

They will be signing people up on the spot for Library membership and allowing them to borrow books on the day of the fair!

I am excited that all sorts of book people are going to be taking part in the fair now and the whole event having an interactive vibe...

Iv'e been trying not to tempt fate by talking to much about this....But my comrade Sophie Lee and I have just found out we have an artist residency at a place called Innospace in Manchester! Innospace is a kind of incubator for new businesses, it's in a really great city centre location (next to the North West Film Archive on Chorlton Street.)and has lot's of white walls that need sorting out...
We are based at the space for a year and we get lots of free business advice and unlimited printing, internet and phone calls in exchange for making some interesting art work for them.
I am pretty excited about this and have got loads of ideas...we are moving into the space in a couple of weeks...So I should start thinking about getting back to Manchester...

This is a quick edit of my most recent film . It is a piece about the idea of idealism, based on photographs taken at Black Mountain College. The film represents the zen approach to physical activity... Through years of practice, a physical activity becomes effortless both mentally and physically, as if the body executes complex and difficult movements without conscious control from the mind....This is also a response to the teachings of Merce Cunningham and John Cage...There is an 8mm film version of this, that is still being processed. Hopefully it will come in time for the degree show and be able to show the beauty of trial and error in flickering movie motion...

This is for students/tutors past and present of Manchester School of Art....
I am looking for people to write a few words or lines about the soon to be demolished Chatham Undercroft Building at Manchester School of Art, for a new book I am working on about the building. You could have happy memories about times when you taught or were taught in that building, moments of failure and enlightenment that you would like to share. I'm after lot's of different viewpoints, they can be abstract or very specific, thoughts feelings or facts that originated in or are about the Undercoft building.

Write a few words or a few hundred words, I'm keen to hear your thoughts.

Black Mountain College

Continuing with investigating Manchester School of Art whilst researching other famous art institutions, namely, Black Mountain College, North Carolina. A school that was only open from 1933 to 1957, producing artists such as Robert Rauschenberg and Cy Twombly who were taught by the likes of John Cage, Merce Cunningham and Josef Albers. I think I'm drawn to the mythical quality of this school-it's brief history and anti-academic, progressive principles...A magazine called '5 Photographers' was produced at the school by the photography students...There was one issue of 25 copies that is extremely rare and has seemingly slipped out of existence...inspired by Black Mountain College I have started to reproduce this magazine for my final project and this is the front cover...a slightly doctored version of a BMC review stolen from the library...

At the end of this month I am going to be in an exhibition called 'The End Is Near' with fellow artistes Sophie Lee, Jerome Cooper and Ed Wiffen. It is being held at the Easa Hq, 43 Hulme Street, Manchester, (The Moonfish building) on the 29th January til the 1st February. The show will feature installations, photographs, print works and video and should be a very curious little event indeed! The opening night is the 29th from 6pm til 8pm, where you can come and see the art and be merry...Here is our blog, keep checking it for the artists progress and event info.
